Sažetak

This paper examines the town of Livno within the context of the early medieval Croatian state and aims to determine whether Livno was a significant centre or merely a rural area on the periphery of the early medieval Croatian state. The topic is approached from various perspectives, especially since Livno, as an inhabited urban area, is almost archaeologically unexplored. Consequently, the research and methods used allow us to go beyond the narrow chronological and geographical frameworks of the fortified early medieval town, which, in terms of stratigraphy, is the greatest unknown to us. Historical sources confirm that Livno was a fortified early medieval town, and in addition to these sources, we also used archaeological finds, topography and
rare remains originating from sites, based upon which we attempted to reconstruct the location and role of the early medieval fortified town of Livno (Cleuna, Hlivno), along with its surrounding area, within the early medieval Croatian state. We also aimed to highlight the circumstances of its destruction and reconstruction.
