Abstract
The tasks of the National Program for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in the Republic of Croatia adopted by the Government of the Republic of Croatia for the period 2021 to 2027 include the following five activities: in situ conservation of crop wild relatives (CWR) and wild food plants (WFP), on-farm conservation and management, ex situ conservation, promotion of sustainable use and capacity building and data exchange. Effective implementation of the National Program enables all important plant genetic resources in the Republic of Croatia to be identified, collected, described and conserved in the collections of the National Plant Genebank and made available for use. Information on the description and assessment of characteristics of conserved plant genetic resources is stored in a database and is publicly available. In the coming period, efforts will be made to conserve wild relatives of cultivated plants in in situ conditions, and the use of plant genetic resources directly, in on farm conditions, as well as indirectly, through use in breeding and research. Specific activities undertaken for the implementation of the National Program include: inventory of existing collections of plant genetic resources, eco-geographical survey and collection of plant genetic resources, conservation of plant genetic resources in situ, on farm and ex situ, maintenance and regeneration of accessions, description and assessment of accessions of plant genetic resources at the morphological, biochemical and molecular level, assessment of the impact of climate change on the conservation / survival of plant genetic resources, assessment of economic values of plant genetic resources in agriculture, food industry, pharmacy and energy, further development of information and documentation system, access to plant genetic resources and the distribution of profits arising from their use, building and strengthening the capacity to conserve plant genetic resources, following the European and international legislative framework in the field of plant genetic resources, informing the public about the importance of conservation and plant genetic resources, and the involvement and encouragement of non-governmental organizations and organizations of farmers in the field of conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources in cooperation with the National Plant Genebank. Within the National Program, there are working groups according to the groups of crops: industrial plants, fodder plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, vegetables, vitis, fruit crops - with subgroups continental fruit species and mediterranean fruit species, cereals and maize and a documentation and information system.
