Sažetak
The paper provides a translation of the Gymnasial Plan from the Scheme for the Organisation of Gymnasia and Realshulen in Austria from 1849 (Entwurf der Organisation der Gymnasien und Realschulen in Oesterreich, I. Gymnasial Plan) as well as presents the circumstances in which it was created and its impact on education in Croatia. Eight-year gymnasia were introduced under the mentioned Plan and thus the balance between the education in classical and living languages and education in math and other sciences was achieved as the precondition for ensuring a balanced and comprehensive education. Matura exams, education by subjects and the pedagogical institution of class masters were introduced under the mentioned Gymnasial Plan as well. It represented the beginning of modern secondary education in the Habsburg Monarchy and the foundation for the development of Austrian (and Croatian) secondary education until far into the 20th century.
