An Attempt to Establish a District Teacher School of Economics in Križevci in 1928

The formation of monarchist Yugoslavia in 1918 was followed by the opening, and later by the closing of numerous schools. It became clear that the existing system could not endure such heavy financial burden. The reduction also affected the Križevci gymnasium and teacher school. In an attempt to save the Križevci school system, they tried to transform the teacher school into a District Teacher School of Economics – the District Board of the Zagreb District Assembly led by Josip Predavec in cooperation with the Križevci teacher Ljubomir Maštrović stood firmly behind the idea. They failed in their two-year struggle because the authorities were not inclined to conceding so Križevci was eventually left with nothing but a lower school of economics that preserved the tradition of all three schools. The District Teacher School of Economics that was to educate both male and female children and take over the students from the Teacher School had an interesting program. The District Teacher School of Economics was never formally established because it was never certified by higher authorities. However, it actually operated until 1932 within the Teacher School that was not abolished until then. Its program was designed by the experts Ljubomir Maštrović, Josip Predavec and, of course, Rudolf Herceg. They were members of the Croatian Peasant Party and very active in the District Board of the Zagreb District Assembly. The school was supposed to be a combination of a teacher school and a school of economics and was to educate future village teachers who would be extensively used in primary schools, as well as in the activities of Seljačka Sloga (Peasant Unison) and in the holding of analphabetic courses. The school had a modern program, which indicates that they used the latest achievements and knowledge of the economy at the time to help improve the rural areas.
