Sažetak

The aim of this paper is to point out some tendencies of manipulative character in short stories for children published in Croatian children’s magazines in the second half of the 19th century. Besides frightening their little readers with the worst possible punishments only for being careless, playful, curious or, God forbids, disobedient, those stories had their other extreme – they were misleading them with unrealistic prizes. The fact that their authors were not afraid that this type of stereotypical literature would soon be seen through and rejected gives us enough information about their awareness of children. Analyzed stories from the first decades of Smilje, the most popular and the longest children’s magazine give enough indicative examples to allow us the assumption that the relationship towards a child was full of mistrust (as it usually is between authority and subordinate), neglect and lack of understanding. The law of blind obedience should have been the top law of child’s life. The means to implement it was intimidation. The fact that pedagogues in this manner communicated directly with children, using their media outside the offi cial readings, was another way of manipulation. Taking into consideration given historical, social and pedagogical context even the assumption that children’s literature, as well as educational messages it proclaimed, is the reflection of the time, does not exclude the need for the critical approach in their study.
