Abstract

The second half of the 19th century is very important for the development of elementary schools in Zagreb and its surrounding areas. With the development of middleclass society and economy there is a greater need for the expansion of education and literacy among wider public, and existing education system could not have fulfilled new needs. At the same time, with the development of Zagreb, local small settlements develop in its near surrounding and there was the expansion of elementary schools in the area.
The documentation in the State Archives in Zagreb gives insight into the historical development of schools in the area which are today western part of Zagreb, in Vrapče, Stenjevec, Podsused and Bizek, in the period from their foundation until 1945, when those settlements existed independently.
