Sažetak
In the paper, the author points to selected decisive moments within the historical debate on the natural moral law, as maintained by Klaus Demmer, one of the most prominent continental moral theologians of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The paper particularly relies on the sixth chapter of his most extensively translated book, Shaping the Moral Life: An Approach to Moral Theology, entitled Moral natural law as a basis of universal communication. In the first part, the author briefly outlines the teachings of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine on natural moral law, which continue to develop faithfully and creatively within the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas. In the second part, the attention is directed to the central determinants of the modern period, which significantly impact the modern concept of natural moral law and its further development. Finally, in the third part of the paper, the author identifies two central challenges in the contemporary discussion of natural moral law: (1) The challenge of understunding and interpreting the relationship between the physical and spiritual dimension of the human person and (2) the challenge of historical change within the argumentation of natural moral law.
