Records of the Marulić Family in the Commune of Split Fonds of the State Archives in Zadar

The records of the Commune of Split (reference number HR-DAZD-16) have been held in the State Archives in Zadar since 1883. They are distributed in 629 boxes, amounting to a total length of 65.80 linear metres. The oldest record comes from 1341, and the fonds concludes in 1797, the year in which Venetian rule over Dalmatia came to an end. The paper presents the history of this fonds and refers to other places in which records of the commune of Split are kept (State Archives in Split, Split Municipal Museum, Chapter Archive in Split). The structure of the fonds is explained: its series are Rectoral Chancellery, Commune Chancellery, Court Records. In the Rectoral Chancellery series there are five documents mentioning the name of Marko Marulić, variously occasioned and temporally discontinuous (October 3 and November 2, 1482; May 12, 1500; around November 5, 1513; June 14, 1521, with later additions). A short review of these five documents mentioning Marulić is provided, as well as of references to them in the scholarly literature. Only one of these documents has not been published or explained. This is an allegation of Jelena Cindro, Marulić’s sister-in-law, of 1513 (Records of Captain and Rector Bernardo da Riva [1512-1515], box 44, fascicle 55, ff. 450v-461v). This document includes the verdict of Rector da Riva of November 5, 1513, delivered in the presence of commune chancellors Petar Papalić and Petar Ferrari; the judgement was recorded by the rector’s scribe and chancellor Nicolaus de Mazuchis.
