Sažetak

Introduction: In their daily work, healthcare workers are exposed to a number of risks, with needlestick injuries being the most common. It is known that the majority of needlestick injuries are still not reported, which further increases the risks.
Aim: This research aims to examine how often needlestick injuries occur among nurses/technicians, how often they are reported, and the reasons they are not reported.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the frequency of needlestick injuries and their reporting among nurses/technicians who have been employed for at least 6 months and are studying at the Catholic University of Croatia. A sample of 70 part-time nursing students was included.
Results: The results show that 48 of 70 respondents experienced needlestick injuries. Of these 48, 20 reported the incident, and 28 did not report it. The unreported needlestick injuries rate was 58%. The most common reason for not reporting was the belief that there was no risk of developing an infection (48% of those who experienced a needlestick injury).
Conclusion: The high frequency of non-reporting of needlestick injuries indicates the need for better education of health personnel and constant campaigns to encourage awareness of reporting each needlestick injury and promoting adherence to standard protective measures in order to reduce the occurrence of needlestick injuries among nurses/technicians and thereby prevent the risk of infection.
