Sažetak
Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae are an integral part of plankton and fouling communities of freshwater ecosystems, where they contribute to the primary production and food networks. However, in increased temperature conditions, higher nutrient input and hydrological stability, they develop more intensively and create secondary metabolites, cyanotoxins, some of which have a toxic impact and pose a risk to the quality and safety of water intended for human consumption and to human health. For the removal of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins, different traditional methods (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration) are used and new innovative treatment approaches are developed (e.g. advanced oxidation processes), with a special emphasis on the development and application of sustainable natural water treatment methods, such as coastal filtration. However, complex operational and technical requirements and a lack of insights into the impacts of toxins in changeable environmental conditions are greatly influencing the monitoring and timely removal of cyanobacteria. All of this indicates a need of integrated, locally adapted approach for ensuring the quality of water intended for human consumption that integrates ecological understanding of the processes in aquatic environments, efficient water status monitoring systems with a special emphasis on cyanobacteria presence, adaptable and modernized water treatment technologies, as well as strengthening legislative frameworks in the conditions of increasing climate and anthropogenic pressures.
