Between Enthusiasm and Caution: Generation Z in Croatia and Chatgpt In Light of Pope Leo Xiv’s Appeal

In a short period of time, artificial intelligence and its tools have moved from enthusiasm at their invention to concern over the personal and social consequences of their rapid and unpredictable development. It is therefore unsurprising that the impact of artificial intelligence on the dignity of the human person and on the common good has increasingly engaged the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, which calls for users to be educated in the responsible use of these tools. The aim of this paper is to establish the level of acceptance and the perception of the ChatGPT tool, together with selected elements of digital literacy, among members of Generation Z in Croatia. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM); 271 respondents took part, and the analysis of the scales is based on the 235 respondents who use ChatGPT. The results show a predominantly neutral attitude towards the tool, with the notable exception of its perceived ease of use, which was rated very positively; a one-sample t-test confirms that perceived usefulness and attitude towards technology differ significantly above the neutral midpoint. Although they use ChatGPT regularly, the respondents do not consider it a reliable source of information and are aware of its potential influence on their own critical thinking, which indicates a critical and cautious approach that is reflected positively in their digital literacy. Their awareness of privacy and security risks, however, is weaker. The findings are related to the messages of the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas of Pope Leo XIV, and on the basis of this comparison guidelines are proposed for the responsible use of artificial intelligence, primarily through artificial intelligence literacy within the education system.
