Sažetak

The author examines the importance of Tomašić's work within the
context of Croatian ethnology. The reason he was so long
neglected lies in insufficient knowledge of the whole of his work
and in disagreement with his main themes (culture and personality)
within scientific discourse as well as in a suspiciousness
towards his methodology. Drawing on the work of Jozo Tomašević,
who comparatively analyzed models of the patriarchai
Dinaric culture of Jovan Cvijić and Tornašlć's attempts to dispute
them, the author is not prepared to completely reject the model of
popular culture and mentality offered by Tomašić. Unquestionable
remains the fact that the latter was the first in Croatia to start cultural
and anthropological exploration and socio-anthropological
thought, while his knowledge of ethnographic and historical data
as well as anthropological imagination have made his hypotheses
permanently challenging.
