Operational zone Bjelovar in Operation Una

Sažetak

Operation Una was the only unsuccessful operation of the Croatian Army in the period from the end of 1994 to the end of 1995. The operation’s objective was to penetrate toward Prijedor in Bosnia. It was a relatively big operation planned in two directions. The auxiliary direction, which is the main subject of our analysis, stretched along the river Sava near Jasenovac and the joint forces of the Operational Zone Bjelovar were in charge of it. The operation was planned at the General Staff Headquarters of the Croatian Army on September 17th, 1995, and its enforcement began a day later. It was completed on September 19th, 1995. The forces attempted to cross the river two times in four different locations in the broader Jasenovac area. Five members of the Croatian Army were killed and 26 were wounded in the operation. Operation Una was the only unsuccessful operation undertaken by the Croatian Army in the operation cycle that had begun in November 1994 on Livanjsko polje. It was thoughtless, undertaken without sufficient preparations, and it completely underestimated the opponent. These were the reasons why the operation proved to be a failure.
