Surface or superficiality?

Sažetak
As a great discussion was led recently about omission of an explicit reference to God's name or Christianism in the Preamble of the Constitution of the EU, the author examines of what and which Christianism we think when speaking of it as a constitutional part of European culture and civilization. He asks himself what Christianism should be in order to be authentic and beforehand socially relevant. In order to reach a satisfactory answer, he articulates his paper in three parts. In the first part, he asks the fundamental question of relationships between Christianism and the antique concepts of »logos«, »ethos« and »nomos« through which Christianism was effectively inculturated into the Hellenistic world and the then Roman Empire. Observing that already at that stage in these starting antique concepts was present a dialectic aspect, the author compares, in the second part of his paper, these already »baptized« contents with Christian spirituality which was present in Europe in the most part as: mystic, popular and monastic, in which specificities the author finds elements of »logos«, »ethos« and »nomos«. In the third part, the question of relationships between spirituality and Europe is discussed. The author refers to the state of the contemporary, on pluralism and individualism based European civilization making distinction between: individually-syncretic, syncretistic-sectarian and confessionally - Christian spiritualities. As any of these spiritualities is not, in its essence, either contemplative-mystic, nor based on the theology of the Cross, what is in itself the quintessence of Christian spirituality as a consequence of God's incarnation, the author concludes that the necessity of commitment for the true Christian spirituality which - being in itself depth - has also its socially relevant surface, while every activity which makes abstraction ofthat spirituality - having no depth - offers only a Christian superficiality.
