Sažetak
In the final evaluation of instrument playing subjects in music schools at the
end of the school year, the most important and often decisive component of the final
grade is the annual exam in instrument playing. This evaluation method is
questionable, as there are doubts regarding its criteria and whether an objective
evaluation of someone's playing and interpretation is possible in the first place.
This research attempts to provide answers to the questions raised in connection with
annual examination in instrument playing as a method of evaluation in music schools.
By way of analysing attitudes of teachers of instruments in music schools, we aim to
determine whether they support the present evaluation method or if they are in favour
of some other method.
The research involved 40 teachers of instrument playing at the Varaždin Music
School. The results have shown that 27 of the respondents agree with the assessment
method adopted for the annual exam in instrument playing, whereas 13 of the
respondents are not in favour of the current method. The most common suggestion
given by the respondents who disagree with the current method of assessment is that
students’ public performances, as well as grades received throughout the year, should
have a greater impact in forming the final grade.
