ANTIOXYDANT-ALPHA LIPOIC ACID IN DIABETES EYE THERAPY

Sažetak

Aim: The aim of this study is to indicate possible influence of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) therapeutical effect in diabetes eye complications.
Patients and methods: Patients data have been used from medical patients sheets from Eye Policlinic in Public Health Center Tuzla. The study was performed in one year and included 100 patients with diabetic retinopathy various types. Patients were divided in two groups: 50 patients with ALA therapy and 50 patients without (control group). Age average was 58 years in group of patients with therapy and 61 years without therapy. Visual equity was controlled and as well as anterior eye segment changes. Intraocular pressure was messured with aplanational tonometry and retinal changes were evaluated with direct ophthalmoscopy.
Therapeutical results were registrated in the begining, six months and one year from begining of ALA therapy wich was applied twice a day with 300 mg in first three months and was continuited with one a day of 300 mg, perioral.
Results: There was 10 % patients with glaucoma in working group and in control group it was 40 %. Cataract was diagnosed in 22 % patients with ALA and 24 % in control group. Glaucoma and cataract combination was presented in 16 % in patients with ALA and 10 % in
patients without ALA therapy. Two patients in ALA therapy group were with optical nerve atrophy and 1 patient had anterior episcleritis.
Conclusions: Significant difference between two groups was in benefit of patients group with ALA therapy which was confirm with t-test (t=4.452 df=49 P<0.05=0.000). Control group without ALA therapy was with higher complications percentage.
