Sažetak

The arcbishopic Roman-Chatolic seminary was founded in Split in 1700. Among other subjects philosophy and natural philosophy were part of the curriculum at this institution. It is interesting that the theses on natural philosophy dating from 1710 defended at this institution at the end of that school year have been preserved. Although it is impossible to find in them any trace of those prime postulates of the physic of that time, Newtonianism and the heliocentric system are often at variance with Aristote1ian natural philosophy. There was a students' discussion group called Degl' Indefessi in the Roman-Chatolic seminary in Split. It is probable that a student Julije Bajamonti had a discussion on vacuum with Shimun Ostoja there. Ostoja stood for Decartes's way of looking at vacuum and Bajamonti opposed him. In his discussion Bajamonti based his arguments on experimental results of his contemporaries. In the papers Bajamonti left the mathematical texts used in teaching in Split were found. A text which was most probably used at the archbishop Roman-Chatolic seminary in Split at the end of the 18th century was found in the Franciscan monastery in Makarska. It dealt entirely with Newtonianism. By the end of the 18th century a strong influence of Newtonianism and the heliocentric point of view could be traced in Split.
If we want to estimate properly the essence of natural philosophical attitudes in Central Dalmatia, the attitudes of students who were studying at institutions abroad should not be neglected because they were important proponents of the natural philosophical idea. Paskal and Andrija Dorotich were students at the Franciscan institution Ara Coeli in Rome at the end of the 18th century. The notes which they took during their studies and the course materials which Andrija Dorotich later wrote in connection with his lectures at Franciscan institutions in Italy show that by the end of the 18th century Newtonianism and the heliocentric point of view were widely accepted. Consequetly, the some attitudes were accepted in Central Dalmatia at the time. A natural philosophical text which was preserved in the Franciscan monastery at Sumartin on the island of Brač might be connected with Andrija Dorotich. In this text Newtonianism and the heliocentric point of view were completely accepted.
