Sažetak
Die Novelle entstand zu einem Zeitpunkt, als Thomas Manns langwierige Wandlung vom Monarchisten zum Republikaner zu ihrem Abschluss kam. Während Mann seit Anfang der 1920er Jahre als überzeugter Verfechter der Weimarer Republik auftritt, hat der 1925 von ihm entworfene Geschichtsprofessor Cornelius ein ambivalentes Verhältnis zu ihr. Dies ist an Cornelius' Verhalten und Gefühlsregungen während der Hausparty seiner Kinder zu erkennen: Er begegnet den jungen Menschen mit Höflichkeit, macht jedoch für sich zahlreiche missbilligende Bemerkungen über sie. Bemerkenswert ist jedoch, dass sein kritischer Gedankenfluss regelmäßig von Momenten der erotisch besetzten Neugierde und Erregung durchdrungen wird.
The novella "Unordnung und frühes Leid" (1925) was written at the period when Thomas Mann's gradual transition from a monarchist to a republican finally came to an end. While from the beginning of the 1920s Thomas Mann himself acts as a convinced advocate of the Weimar Republic, his fictional character Cornelius, a professor of history, has an ambivalent relationship to it. This can be observed on Cornelius' behavior and stirs of emotion during his house party: although he acts politely towards young people, he also makes numerous disapproving remarks about them. In addition to that, it should be noted that his critical stream of thoughts constantly gets interrupted by moments of erotic curiosity.
