Sažetak

Croatian historiography has not devoted sufficient attention to the problem of maritime navigational routes on the Adriatic during the early centuries A. D. In an attempt to contribute to the illumination of this problem, the author primarily uses the book "Viaggio da Venetia a Constantinopoli" by the Italian Renaissance writer and geographer Guiseppe Rosaccio. The habitual directions of the maritime navigational routes on the Adriatic during the 16th and 17th centuries can be determined with sufficient certainty through a scholarly analysis of the text and its cartographic descriptions. The navigational route began in Venice, the most important maritime-trading center on the Adriatic. Because of their exposure to powerful winds within the Venetian bay the ships would continue their journey alongside the North Italian coast. Nearby the islet of St. Nicholas the navigational route continued further along the western coast of Istria with its important strongholds in Rovinj and Pula. Reaching the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula, the sea voyage would continue through the Osor channel and onwards along the outer string of Northern Adriatic islands (Silba, Ist, Molat) or from the North Croatian littoral by way of the larger islands of Krk, Rab and Pag towards the South. The alternative navigational route along the Croatian coast from Istria through the canal below the Velebit mountain chain was not widely used during this period priomarily because of the danger posed by attacks waged by the Uskoks from Senj. Taken as a whole, the navigational routes on the North Adriatic remained more or less the same in the unchanged conditions of ship journeys using sails. What changed at certain historical points was the significance of a particular navigational route and with it the importance of strongholds along this route.
