On the Cause of the Blue Shine on the Fruits in Viburnum tinus L.

Sažetak
It has been possible to confirm that the striking blue shine of the Viburnum tinus fruits is the consequence of optical phenomena in the outer colourless and transparent cell wall of the epidermis.
In this region electron micrographs show cuticular layers consisting of grains which could be the cause of the blue shine by either light scattering or interference.
As no polarisation phenomena could be observed perpendicularly to the direction of the incident light, light interference remains as the only probable cause.
