HOW ONE EXHIBITION ENRICHED THE CULTURAL FARE OF ZADAR IN 2013

Sažetak
The year 2013 was significant for being the 130th anniversary
of the birth of Ivan Meštrović. To mark the year, the Ivan
Meštrović Museums prepared an exhibition entitled Let us
express our gratitude to her firstly in Meštrović’s native Vrpolje
(Slavonia), in the Ivan Meštrović Memorial Gallery and then,
in a somewhat altered form, in association with the Gallery of
Fine Arts of the National Museum in Zadar, in the exhibition
pavilion the City Loggia.
Thus the beginning of Meštrović’s life in this world in Vrpolje
was symbolically commemorated, while Zadar can be considered
the city in which Meštrović the artist was born, through
the publication of an article in the Zadar newspaper Narodni
list long ago in 1899, when the exceptional talent of the lad
Ivan Gabrilović Meštrović was first mentioned. Since this is
an artist of world importance, the exhibition created great
interest in the domestic public and in visitors to the city. In the
announcement at the press conference it was pronounced the
cultural event of the year in Zadar.
The good response was undoubtedly due to the accompanying
programme with which the organiser endeavoured to attract
as great a range of visitors as could be, from the very young
to the much older, from inhabitants of the city to visitors from
abroad. In this article we provide a survey and cross-section
of the exhibition and of all the additional activities that were
laid on during the preparations for and duration of the exhibition.
