The Subversion of the Normativization of the Female Gender Through an Aesthetic Act of Self-observation: Case Study of the Digital Artist Molly Soda

The essay proposes a transdisciplinary analysis and contextualization of an aesthetic approach to the female body and bedroom of the digital artist Molly Soda. Embedded in the tradition of feminist theory and artistic practice, Molly Soda contributes and in her work participates in the collective feminist counter-public. Building on the notion of citation, as elaborated by Jacques Derrida, as well as the performativity of gender by Judith Butler, the essay references important artistic and cultural practices and forms that have predated the feminist art—in particular the feminist punk movement Riot grrrl and the British artis Tracey Emin. Following upon the specific cultural influences, Molly Soda’s digital art makes it possible for us to map and theoretically ground different tendencies in today’s feminist digital art. Focusing on the phenomenon of the woman’s body and woman’s experience, Molly Soda in her performances of self-observation subverts, comments on and reinscribes not only the meanings of (normative, ascribed) femininity and female body, but also, in a broader context, the meaning of art – by pushing the boundaries of autonomy and originalty of the work of art.
