Some Characteristics of the Public of the Informative-Political Press

Sažetak
In the article the authors describe and compare some elements
of the demographic, social and political profiles of readers of
leading informative-political papers in Croatia in 2002 (Vjesnik,
Ve~ernji list, Jutarnji list, Slobodna Dalmacija, Novi list, Glas Slavonije,
Globus, Nacional, Feral Tribune), and based on equivalent
data from 1998, analyse the possible differences in the structure
of the public emerging in circumstances of a changed political
context. Analytical data have been gathered within extensive research
of public opinion, conducted on probabilistically selected
samples of the Croatian population over the age of 18. The results
of this analysis indicate in the first place that the readers of
informative-political press, observed in general, significantly differ
from the rest of the Croatian public according to all the analysed
characteristics (they are younger on average, more educated,
have a higher standard of living, are more often urban residents and of urban origin, are more intensively involved in the media
and more likely to participate in elections and political options
which are, generally speaking, relatively more attractive to better
educated urban voters). Comparisons among the press reveal,
however, that with regard to essential demographic and social
characteristics, it is possible to distinguish among the more specifically
profiled public of republic papers form the somewhat less
profiled readers of regional editions. The other dichotomy observed
indicates mutual differentiation – tentatively – between the
more "elitist" and "popular" papers, whose public differs according
to demographic and social characteristics, but also with regard
to some (partly connected with the latter) indicators of general
media-involvement and political orientation.
