Sažetak

The article shows the positions of the Catholic hierarchy, reform-minded priests, and liberal laymen concerning the internal reform and the public role of the Roman Catholic Church at the breakup of the feudal system in Croatia.
Liberal laymen attempted to limit the Church's influence to matters related to religion, which the hierarchy opposed. Even though the reform-minded priests accepted certain liberal premises, the expression »Liberal Catholicism« should be used cautiously. In addition to frequent change of attitudes, they were more concerned about reforms within the Church (suspension of obligatory celibacy, diminishment of the bishops' disciplinary authority, advocacy of episcopalism, use of vernacular in the ecclesial administration, and induction of the Slavic liturgy) than with the social demands of liberalism. The reform-minded priests accepted societal changes, in the belief that they themselves were initiators of those changes.
