Sažetak

The relationship between morphological characteristics and performance in football was analyzed in a group of 51 subjects of average football ability.
The morphological characteristics were defined as the latent dimensions responsible for the longitudinal dimensionality of the skeleton (L), adipose tissue (M), body volume and mass (V) and the transverse dimensionality of the skeleton (T) and they were treated as the set of predictive variables. Performance in football was evaluated by means of two sets of variables which were both treated as criterial sets. The first set was extracted by means of factor analysis of situational-motoric tests which provided the following latent dimensions: precision of hitting target (PRECPS), manipulation with the ball (BARA TL), dribbling speed (BRZVOD), ball kicking power (SNAUDL) and speed of non-linear running (BKRVIT). The second set was obtained by condensation of the evaluations of judges who observed players over a number of matches and awarded points for technique (TEHNIK), tactics in attack (NAPAD), tactics over a number of matches and awarded points for technique (TEHNIK), tactics in attack (NAPAD), tactics in defence (OBRANA), creativity (STAVA RA), responsibility (ODGOVO), commitment (ANGAZI), behaviour (PONASA) and overall performance (OPCOCJ). The relationship between the predictive and criterial sets were established by means of a canonical of covariance and by a robust regression procedure. A weak negative influence was found of body volume and mass on situational-motoric abilities which form the base of football technique. A slightly stronger influence was observed of stenomorphy on ball-kicking power. Stenomorphy, however, was found to have a clearly negative influence on the skill of manipulation with the ball.
No important nor significant connections were found between morphological characteristics and subjective evaluations of performance.
It seems that aesthetic pycnomorhphia is favurable for the formation of effective motional structures in football, while stenomorphy is favourable only for those elements of technique which depend greatly on the magnitude of force generated.
