Theologico-historical research of starting points of the so-called new religion

Sažetak
Theological evaluation of Mardešić's contribution to understanding of contemporary religious phenomenon The author examines the theologicio-historical starting points of the so-called new religion. He starts from the socioreligiological and religiological analysis of the contemporary religious phenomenon exposed by Željko Mardešić in his capital posthumous work Rascjep u svetome (The Split in the Holy) (2007). The author starts from the premise that Mardešić successfully exposed the emergence of the so-called new religion on the wings of the third wave of development of modern science which unexpectedly gave birth to a new, alternative science. This one intimately links itself to contemporary religious movements, especially to contemporary existential experiences of spirituality and religiosity thus creating a syncretic religious phenomenon which Mardešić calls new religion, respectively religious science or scientific religion. But this one did not emerge at once; instead, its appearance is owed to previous attempts to answer the question of truth. The author tries to show that Mardešić's explanation of new religion is neither stretched nor improper but quite logical because his research confirms that new religion stems from the soil of failures in earlier historical answers to the question of relationships of religious and scientific truth. Thus the Mardešić's thesis is confirmed that the contemporary encounter between religious and scientific truth happens on an alternative gauge which, independently from official expectations, creates favourable conditions for linking disparate elements in a unique syncretical formation called new religion. The author also exposes arguments in favour of a new relationship - in dialogue - between Church and science. However, at the same time the author proves, although here it could be a question of a necessary and desirable turning point in relations between Church and science, that it is still a proof of a historical failure in their mutual relationship, a fact which gave a big, and maybe a decisive contribution to the emergence and widening of the new religion in the Western - Christian - hemisphere.
