Croatian Friesachs – The First Croatian Coins (3)
Robert Smajlagić
; Hrvatsko numizmatičko društvo, Zagreb, HR
Sažetak
The author analyses the denars Rengjeo and Koch designated as Croatian friesachs. He determines the difference between royal (Hungarian) and ducal (Croatian) issue on the grounds of typography, style and minting techniques, recognising a frequent obverse type on Hungarian denars that he calls “reduced obverse denars”. He explains the different minting techniques used for the Hungarian and friesach denar types. On the basis of his own opinion and the errors, which have already been noted, in Rengjeo’s Corpus der mitterlalterlichen Münzen von Kroatien, Slavonien, Dalmatien und Bosnien, Graz, 1959, the author creates a new catalogue, eliminating from it the types which in his opinion do not belong among Croatian friesachs, but which the above authors included. He also incorporates some denars that Rengjeo, in the above book, and Koch in his Corpus Nummorum Austriacorum, Vienna, 1994, did not include among Croatian denars.
