Sažetak
School Chronicle, a miscellany on the history of schooling and education, is a regular publication of the Slovenian School Museum. It emerged from the tradition of the Miscellany on the History of Schooling and Education (Zbornik za zgodovino šolstva in prosvete), a combined journal of school and education museums in Ljubljana, Zagreb and Belgrade that was first published in 1964. Due to the scarcity of finance, the Educational Museum in Belgrade stopped its cooperation at Volume 23. The last volume, i.e. Volume 24, of the combined miscellany of the Croatian School Museum in Zagreb and the Slovenian School Museum in Ljubljana appeared in 1991. In the next year, 1992, Volume 25 of the miscellany was published under a new name, the School Chronicle, and has subsequently appeared as an independent publication of the Slovenian School Museum. In 2001 we published the tenth volume of the School Chronicle which, since 1999, has appeared twice a year. We who edit the publication like to abide by the saying that we should study the ancient to know the new. The fundamental motto of the School Chronicle team is that all knowledge is hardly understandable and invalid unless we know its developmental routes and roots. By studying the history of schooling, we can show our readers ways to fi nd solutions to contemporary educational issues.
Publishing the miscellany every year (in more recent times two volumes a year) is an extremely demanding job for a museum limited in resources and requires great eff ort and a range of activities. The journal publishes the results of research undertaken by the Museum’s associates, researchers at institutes and universities as well as experts from schools, museums, archives and others dealing with education. The miscellany is designed for everyone engaged in the tradition of schooling and education, especially teachers, experts on the history of schools and education, and junior researchers at primary and secondary schools. The School Chronicle covers historical aspects of education, training and schooling, ranging from theoretical contributions, studies of local history, as well as overviews of biographies and bibliographies. Most articles discuss the history of schooling in the territory now known as Slovenia, but also tackle nearby countries and the broader European area. The main regular headings are: Articles and discussion papers, Contributions and materials, School reminiscences, Anniversaries (of schools and teachers), Museum activities, Reports and reviews. Volumes of the tenth year include a new heading, Bits and pieces from the school past, intended particularly to encourage refl ections on the significance of school heritage and its preservation. Key articles come with an abstract in English and a summary in German, while the titles of all contributions have English and German translations. The papers are classified according to the UDK classification, and the topics covered by the School Chronicle are entered into the Cooperative Online Bibliographic System (Cobiss).
A detailed overview of the Miscellany for the History for Schooling and Education (1–24), as well as a bibliography of articles by Slovenian authors, was prepared by Mladen Tancer and published in the School Chronicle No. 26 (Ljubljana 1993). On the occasion of the international conference of school museums and collections on the school history in 1995 in Germany (Göldenitz – Rostock), Branko Šuštar presented the publication from 1992 to 1995 in a special issue of the School Chronicle. This contribution presents the School Chronicle in the period from 1992 to 2001, as well as its significance for researching schooling of the 20th century. Special mention is made of the contributions dealing with Croatia’s history of schooling, ranging from the initial contributions, such as the report on the exhibitions of the Croatian School Museum (Marko Plavić, School Chronicle (SC) 25/1992; Elizabeta Serdar, SC 26/1993 and SC (XXVII) 3/1994), and professional contributions, such as those by Josip Baćič, Josip Ribarić and Josip Brnobić, Croatian educators, Istrian refugees in Slovenian schools (Božo Jakovljević, SC (XXVII) 3/1994) all up to the last papers published in the School Chronicle appearing in 1998, i.e. one hundred years of the Slovenian School Museum; the contribution of Antun Cuvaj to the establishment of the Croatian School Museum in Zagreb (Ivan Vavra), the Croatian School System at the end of the 19th century (Štefka Batinić) and reports on the new permanent exhibition at the Croatian School Museum (Branko Šuštar, SC (XXXIII) 9/ No. 2, 2000).
