Abstract
Croatian Baroque literature includes many valuable authors, a lot of whom have distinguished themselves over the years, which is why they are nowadays included in the canon of Croatian literature. Vladislav Menčetić is one of the famous Dubrovnik poets and authors of the 17th century, even though his literary works became so popular only after his death despite his social status during his lifetime. His most valuable work, Trublja slovinska, is a panegyric dedicated to Petar Zrinski, who is a symbol of heroism, Croatian nation in general and the Christian fight against the Turks. The aim of this paper is to analyze different histories of Croatian literature and investigate the ways in which Vladislav Menčetić and his poem Trublja slovinska are showcased and represented in them. However, considering the Serbian appropriation of Croatian, and especially Dubrovnik, Renaissance and Baroque literature, Menčetić’s name can also be found in the reviews of literature written by Serbian literary historians. It is worth investigating whether literary historians exalt Menčetić and his already mentioned poem, that is, whether they recognize the true value of this epic, or whether they disparage the author’s efforts to write a panegyric dedicated to Croatian/Slavic heroism, and if so, what are the possible reasons. For the purposes of this paper, nineteen literary histories were analyzed, thirteen written by Croatian literary historians and six by Serbian literary historians. The methods used in this paper include methods of description, analysis, comparison, and synthesis.
