Othering and Representation of Foreign Workers in Croatian Online Media in 2024 and 2025*

Abstract
This study examines the representation of foreign workers in Croatian online media during peak coverage periods in 2024 and 2025. Using quantitative content analysis of 269 headlines and 210 articles across ideologically diverse outlets, the research explores frames, naming practices, the presence of different voices and sentiments towards foreign workers, and the media engagement with migrant-related disinformation. The findings reveal that foreign workers were predominantly contextualized through conflict, victimhood, and social tension, accompanied by a strong dominance of negatively toned headlines. Institutional actors dominated coverage, while foreign workers’ voices remained comparatively marginal. References to disinformation narratives were rare, which raises questions about the choice of professional media whether to report on disinformation or not, and the potential effects of such coverage. The study demonstrates how journalistic “critical choices” may contribute to symbolic othering of foreign workers in a society undergoing rapid demographic and labor market transformation.
