Sažetak
In the context of recognizing and protecting young people in the field of mental health, schools as institutions have the opportunity to direct their efforts toward identifying students at risk and preventing the occurrence of problems. Since many schools do not employ professionals specialized in mental health, school pedagogues focus their pedagogical work on providing help and support to students. The aim of this study was to examine the perspectives of secondary school pedagogues regarding the methods of identifying and protecting high school students in the field of mental health, as well as their self-assessment of competence in working with students with impaired mental health. The research involved nine secondary school pedagogues from central and northern Croatia, and data were collected through interviews. The results show that pedagogues identify students individually and through collaboration with other professionals; they act protectively through universal prevention at school and by providing support to students; however, they assess themselves as insufficiently competent to work with such students. This study contributes to the understanding of the practical role of pedagogues in promoting and supporting students’ mental health
