Sažetak
This article provides an overview of the most famous and important disasters that have befallen the Parthenon, from antiquity to the present day, examining the archaeological, literary and media traces of the fate of the Athenian temple, dedicated to the patroness of the city, the goddess Athena. Particular emphasis is placed on the work of Lord Elgin in transporting a significant amount of original material to London in the early 19th century. The greatest attention is paid to the chronology of events during which parts of the Parthenon were removed from their original location and transported to the British Museum, as well as the manner in which the Elgin Marbles were transported and the unfortunate fate of the shipwreck Mentor. The stripping of the Parthenon is interpreted in relation to earlier scientific reflections on the Parthenon, contextualizing its construction, physical characteristics, use and various modalities of its later purpose. In addition to the story of the journey of the Parthenon sculptures through Europe, the article also provides information about the distinctive characters and their distinctive life stories, who “cleansed” Greece of its classical monuments during the Ottoman rule. It also looks at the role that the Parthenon has played in the modern perception and reception of antiquity, becoming a model of the ideal and “typical” Greek temple, even though, in its essence, the Parthenon is anything but a common and typical example of Greek architecture.
