Sažetak

Although it is well known that Antun Vrančić planned to write a contemporary history
of the Kingdom of Hungary, essentially a continuation of Bonfini’s work, only more or
less coherent fragments of this great undertaking were completed or have survived. Most
of his manuscripts are now preserved in the Széchényi National Library in Budapest, and
the historical texts appeared in print in the first volume of László Szalay’s monumental
Vrančić edition in the mid-19th century.
Apart from their incompleteness, another characteristic feature of Vrančić’s historical
works, or rather fragments of them, is that they do not seem to have become part of the
historical literature that flourished during the 16th century, even during the author’s lifetime:
while there are lively links to and influences on many other contemporary authors and their
works, the texts of the Vrančić collection seem to have been left out of this circulation. It
seems that neither the works of Vrančić nor those of the authors he collected (e.g. Sirmiensis/Szerémi) were read, used or known. This paper attempts to use a little-known fragment of Vrančić’s account of the events
of the year 1551 to show that the famous Viennese humanist and Habsburg court historian
Wolfgang Lazius knew and used this text, and that its creation is explicitly linked to Vrančić’s change of sides two years earlier.
