Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to delineate a potential new field of comparative research
on Croatian Renaissance literature by introducing the phenomenon of Cretan Renaissance
literature, which has been neglected in the tradition of research on the European context
of the Renaissance in Slavic literatures. Like Dalmatia, Crete was ruled by the Republic
of Venice, whose cultural influence resulted in the emergence of intriguing vernacular
literature. This literature delivered its most important works in the decades preceding
the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1669. The rather small but valuable body of texts
written in the Cretan dialect of Greek has rarely been compared to the Renaissance literature produced in Croatian, Latin and Italian by authors from Venetian Dalmatia and the
sovereign Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). The paper provides a comparative insight into
the contextual, formal and thematic points of contact among these literary traditions. The
study is divided into four parts. The first part outlines the historical and cultural context
of the Cretan Renaissance. The second and most extensive part focuses on the works and
genres of Cretan Renaissance literature. The third part deals with the mutual representations
of Crete and Dalmatia in the works of Renaissance poets. Part four discusses Cretan and
Dubrovnik-Dalmatian Renaissance literature from a comparative perspective and outlines
the similarities and differences between the two most important centers of literary Renaissance in the broadly conceived Eastern Mediterranean.
