Sažetak

Croatia can be proud of the fact that it is one of the most intact European countries, and could even partly impose its ecological standards regarding agricultural production to other countries. Soil is the biggest natural resource man disposes of and just because of that it is necessary to take into account its fertility and indirectly also our own health. Conventional agriculture in Croatia is the second largest causative of the pollution of soil, water and air besides traffic, and if we add the fact that we get 90% of food from soil and that in the last several decades the humus content has been reduced by more than 50%, the situation becomes alarming. Organic agriculture offers a solution. By its guidelines it minimizes the use of agrochemicals, reduces the dependence on fuel, stimulates the biological processes in nature and builds up the very important fertility of soil. Since the obstacles to the development of Croatian organic agriculture are the lack of education and promotion, and the ignorance of the harmful effects of synthetic pesticides and herbicides on human health, it is imposes necessary to review of organic agriculture in general and statistical data on organic olive growing in the world and in Croatia.
