FLOWER SPECIES USED FOR DRIED FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS – OFFER AND DEMAND OF THE SEED

Sažetak
Seed production of flower species does not exist in the Republic of Croatia. The
scope of flower production is very low and large extent of current demand is satisfied
by import, despite favorable climate conditions for production.
Flower producers obtain commercial flower species intended for public surfaces,
private gardens and decorative flower pots through dealerships of foreign multinational
companies and consumer protection of flower producers is not sufficient in terms of
quality assurance. Production of seed and planting material of flowers and greenery for
cutting is primarily based on import. Seeds of flower species for amateur gardeners,
hobbyists are also based on import. Selection of species imported by dealerships
depends on their knowledge of the respective market segment as well as on the interest
of the market itself for individual species – those with decreased demand gradually
disappear from retail trade. All above mentioned influences the appearance of
landscape, environment, house lots, decorative flower pots and flower arrangements.
We recognized the production segment of flower species intended for dried flower
arrangements as being specially endangered despite tradition and market need for this
kind of flower seeds. We conducted secondary research of the relevant web content
related to data on flower production and consumption in the EU.
Through research of attitudes and needs of florists and consumers in the area of
Koprivnica-Križevci County by means of survey questionnaires quantitative i.e. primary
research was conducted. Furthermore, building on quantitative primary research, the
scope of production of flower species intended for dried flower arrangements was
researched by means of structured interviews with the producers in the area of
Koprivnica-Križevci County. In addition, survey questionnaire was used on the sample of florist representatives in Koprivnica-Križevci County in order to establish the scope
of import of flower species intended for dried flower arrangements. Research of current
offer of flower species intended for dried flower arrangements in agricultural
pharmacies in Koprivnica-Križevci County provided data on seed origin and number of
species available on the market.
