Sažetak
Old notion of dynamic and active culture is today replaced by a culture of passive reception. The crown of this new cultural paradigm is reality show, a model through which media creates and simulates reality as well as influences our conceptions of reality itself. When it comes to regional media networks, “residential” reality show is the most common representative of the genre. This subgenre shows protagonists living and competing for survival in a studio that mimics everyday life and habitation. Profitability from this kind of reality show dictates that regional television is dominated by no more than four shows at the same time, that is four modes of habitation. This paper looks at the types of the models of habitation and space perception that the viewers are exposed to and how closely these television models imitate everyday life. The paper also analyzes four most popular reality shows in Serbia: “Big Brother”, “Farma”, “Dvor” and “Parovi”. There are some distinct features in this way of living and space perception, such as spatial configuration of the main rooms in the house. The imperative of media surveillance has produced a specific spatial configuration based on open spaces and lack of spaces reserved for privacy. Everything is directed toward interaction between residents. Influence of such media’s models of habituation on the formation of 21st century lifestyles is almost imminent and deserves further investigation.
