Sažetak

Social competence is a complex construct that refers to the effective functioning in a social context and efficient achievement of personal goals. In modern society, it is vital to interact with others and to establish good professional and personal relationships. Therefore, social competence has been recognized as one of the key competences in the numerous attempts to define the basic competences which need to be developed throughout compulsory
education. This article highlights the importance of social competence as one of the educational goals, with particular emphasis on the representation of social and emotional development of students in the national curriculum. Besides the guidelines at the national level, it is necessary to develop various programmes of social and emotional learning which can be integrated into school curricula and whose methods and guidelines can be applied in daily
work with students. This paper presents two such programmes: SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) and PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies), whose methods are being applied in thousands of schools around the world, showing significant results in promoting and improving the social competence of students.
