Sažetak
This paper presents a modern concept of homeschooling, which gained
popularity due to increasing criticism of formal education. Since this kind of education
still has not been made legally possible in the Republic of Croatia, the author
focuses on the analysis of starting points related to demands for homeschooling as
well as on its critical examination. An attempt to amend the Act on Education in Primary
and Secondary Schools has been made by the Croatian Catholic Coalition,
which submitted a request for legalization of homeschooling to the Ministry of Science,
Education and Sports. Its thorough analysis points at three important elements:
homeschooling based on an authentic Croatian homeschooling model, unquestionable
qualifications of parents, and assessment of knowledge which takes place more than
once per year, which puts students into an unfavourable position. On the other hand,
the paper emphasises the school environment and peer groups as important socialization
factors, including the most important factor - teachers' education – which is of
higher quality, and their continual training, professionally based selection of students
for a teaching vocation, a much smaller number of students per one teacher and rewarding
teachers for their work.
