Religious Education and Social Cohesion. Some Aspects of Croatian Society and Church as a Source of Questions and Duty for the Training of RE Teachers

Sažetak
Religious education as an integral part of the curriculum, among other things, is faced with the question of in which way and how much it contributes to the educational inclusion of students with different educational needs and opportunities and as well as how it contributes to social bonding. Are the RE teachers trained for these tasks? What is the basic and ongoing formation of RE teachers in respect to such training? Some points of faith and the forms of religion are being accused of separating students. Reflections regarding these issues were dealt with at this year's meeting of the members of the European Forum for the school religious education, which is discussed here in relation to the situation in Croatia. This has led to questioning the wider religious and social situation that affects the ability or inability to achieve these tasks in religious education in Croatia.
Accordingly, the article shows the importance of religion and the Catholic Church in society on the basis of the religious identification of the population, but also the ambivalent perception of religious and ecclesiastical presence in society from the viewpoint of the non-religious minority. The article also deals with the organizational and legal framework of the status of religious education and training of RE teachers in Croatia. The third part presents some trends of mentality closure in the Church which in turn prevents openness towards secular society and a developed capacity for dialogue with others and those that are different. Finally, attention is focused on the need to strengthen the religious orientation on the track of the Second Vatican Council which in the area of religious education contributes to achieving the tasks of the service of the Church in the Modern World.
