Sažetak

Analyzing the contemporary trends among stakeholders in higher
education in developed countries, this article tries to show that one of the substantial preconditions for the economic development ought to be the encouragement of formalized collaboration between the following three groups of actors: the government, universities and the industrial sector. In favour of such public-private cooperation speak the statistical data of the world’s leading universities which practice the given type of collaboration and show an increase in quantity and quality of outputs in research and development
(R&D). Collaboration with private partners in higher education promotes better employability, especially that of doctoral students, in the private sector. Higher employability, as well as an improvement in R&D, results from the improvement of students’ practical skills while applying theoretical knowledge in collaborative research centres (CRC), by getting work experience in private firms and taking part in strategic partnerships. The advantages of the public-private partnership in higher education overcome its deficiencies and its implementation is a logical request of the contemporary
postindustrial context and of the massification of higher education.
