COMPARISON OF BLOOD MINERAL CONCENTRATION IN SHEEP BETWEEN DUBROVNIK RUDA AND ZETSKA ZUJA

Sažetak
The aim of this study was to compare the concentration of blood minerals in Dubrovnik ruda and Zetska zuja sheep as well as their potential variations from reference values . The sheep were pregnant, average age of three years and in satisfactory physical condition. There was a significantly higher concentration of sodium, iron and magnesium in the blood of Dubrovnik ruda, and significan higher concentrations of phosphorus in the blood of Zetska zuja. The concentrations of calcium and potassium in the blood did not differ significantly depending on the breed of sheep. Lower concentration of calcium was also determined in the blood of both breeds and a lower concentration of phosphorus in the blood of Dubrovnik ruda and iron in the blood of Zetska zuja compared to the reference values. These changes in the concentration of blood minerals are the result of different stages of pregnancy and the quality of nutrition. Concentration of blood minerals in Dubrovnik ruda and Zetska zuja point out the importance of their monitoring in order to meet their needs, particularly in highly demanding physiological stages, like pregnancy.
