Sažetak

The issue of multiculturalism in a multicultural society is gaining momentum. Culture is something that we learn, and we also need to learn and develop competencies for life in a multicultural environment achieving intercultural dialogue. Through an analysis of the relevant literature, the authors discuss the issue of education for interculturality, intercultural competence and the role of pedagogue in matters of education for intercultural relations. In the paper the authors present the results of research they conducted among the students of the Department of Pedagogy and the Department of Cultural Studies, Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka. The study examines the social distance towards national and religious groups of students. The instrument was the questionnaire for sociodemographic indicators and intercultural competence and Bogardus scale of social distance. The results showed that students express a positive attitude towards ethnic and religious groups except the particles of marriage and less close friendships with certain national and religious groups.
