Sažetak

This paper compares, at a practical level, the three well-known and frequently used approaches to dealing with problem situations in educational facilities (the Gordon approach, the Juul approach and the Katz-McClellan approach) with a new approach called Problem Situation Management (PSM). For all the approaches the authors list important features which, in their opinion, favour the development of social competence in a child. When compared to the PSM, all three approaches exhibit procedures strongly opposing the authors’ theoretical hypotheses. Unlike the PSM, all three approaches contain elements of the traditional way of dealing with problems, perpetuating the dominant role of an adult who takes the problem off the child’s hands, thrusts its solution upon the child, guesses the child’s needs and wishes, evaluates the child’s behaviour, etc. The results of the comparison of the approaches suggest that the PSM might have better results in practice, which remains to be corroborated by an appropriate empirical study.
