BENEFITS AND RISKS OF GENETIC ENGINEERING: ATTITUDES TOWARDS GENETIC ENGINEERING IN MEDICINE, AGRONOMY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Hrvoje Čorak
Sažetak
In this paper presented are the results of an empirical research on uses and risks of genetic engineering in medicine, agronomy, and environmental protection. The research has been carried out 1999 on a sample consisting of students of the University of Zagreb.
In the first, theoretical part of the paper discussed are some dilemmas concerning the use of genetic engineering, as well as its social expense. Genetic engineering has been also analyzed from the perspective of the risk society. Listed are also the advantages and risks, genetic engineering exerts on medicine, agronomy, and environmental protection. In the second, empirical part of the paper shown are groups of informant's attitudes towards applying genetic engineering in these areas, and the informant's confidence into the information sources concerning genetic engineering. From the results can be followed that they can be classified into four groups of information sources (the goverment's sector, independent experts, non govermantal organisations, and biotechnological industry). Tested are also differences between the students of included faculties (School of Medicine, Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Philosophy, and Croatian Studies), concerning the attitudes towards genetic engineering. By a regression analysis, analyzed is also the impact of various factors upon the seven extracted factors making up attitudes towards the uses and risks of genetic engineering, and a general attitude towards it. In the final part of the paper presented are potential advantages and risks concerning genetic engineering, as well as some dilemmas (ecological, social, ethical) arising from its use in various life areas.
