Sažetak

Potato seed production is a very important branch of agricultural production in the Republic of Croatia. Since 1985 areas of domestic seed production have been decreasing. In 1993 and 1994 they were the lowest since World War II. This was mainly the result of war in Croatia partly inactivating production in Lika. Some producers decreased production for different reasons (economic problems, some biological problems in seed production). Higher frequency of PVY virus and particularly recent apperance of PVYⁿ caused drop in production of some cultivars. Some seed growers in Croatia are not aware of equal importance of the main factors in seed production in their interaction with regard to the quality of produced seed (elements of environment in production, genetic resistance of cultivars and agrotechnology used). None of the above factors should be either overestimated or underestimated. We can control agrotechnology in seed production and the choice of cultivars while the elements of environment must be viewed from the aspect of stronger of weaker frequency of vectors of virus infection.
