YIELDS OF THE NEWLY DEVELOPED Bc WINTER WHEAT CULTIVARS AND THEIR GENETIC RESISTANCE TO CERTAIN FUNGAL DISEASES

Sažetak

Increase in wheat production per hectare for the period 1955 – 85 amounted 85.976 kg/ha (Novoselović, 1997) yearly. A significant share of it can be attributed to the Zagreb Bc lnstitute for Breeding and Production of Field Crops, especially from 1975 to 1986. ln 1971, Zlatna dolina and Sanja, semi-dwarf winter wheat cultivars with high yielding potential and suited to intensive production technology were registered. Following that further wheat breeding was aimed at increasing yielding potential, simultaneously incorporating genetic resistance to the diseases, which under our growing conditions affect yield reduction the most (stem rust, powdery mildew, Fusarium spp. and Septoria spp.). So far, the Zagreb Bc Institute has released 70 winter wheat cultivars, of which 13 are registered outside the country. Distinguishing by their characters are the new common wheat cultivars Anita, Branka, Dora, Mihelca, Valentina, Aura and Liberta, and hard wheat cultivar Primadur. The mentioned common wheat cultivars have higher yields than standard varieties. Among them, Anita and Branka have over 10% higher yields than standard variety, Sana. All these cultivars have appropriate vegetation period for our climatic conditions and show satisfactory resistance to stem rust, powdery mildew, Septoria spp. and Fusarium spp.
