Sažetak

In the educational system of the Republic of Croatia, music schools, as art and educational institutions, have an important social role, determining and promoting culture. Despite numerous theories on music and pedagogical issues, which focus on teaching instrument problems and list the advantages of the open model, where teachers, based on their professional and pedagogic competences adapt the teaching content to the needs and interests of the students and their time, as well as modernize and enhance the traditional methodical and didactic organization of teaching, the traditional approach, where the teacher plays the dominant role, is still common in music schools. Instrument teachers are, during their higher education, primarily focused on developing their musical skills, while they acquire the pedagogical skills in a small number of pedagogical and psychological courses. Their teaching is based on their own experiences during instrument lesson, so they teach how they have been taught. The traditional approach is justified by the acquisition of musical competences and it is believed that this approach results in highly developed instrument playing skills and success in competitions. Teachers often neglect the acquisition of musical knowledge, skills and habits, the development of a value system, critical thinking, creativity and, ultimately, the complete musical and cultural development of the student. This paper points to new paradigms of teaching music, besides the traditional approach, with an individual approach and optimal development of each student, regardless of their talent. This approach will help the instrument teacher arouse the interest and curiosity of each student, using professional and modern pedagogic approaches, with high quality methodical and didactic realization of learning outcomes. Through continuous analysis of their own work they can improve their teaching and professional development.
