Sažetak

In recent years, a growing number of private hostels has been established in Zagreb in order to generate income for entrepreneurs while most of them are not hoteliers and lack formal knowledge in this industry. The motives of the establishment are often different and among them is the trend of increasing the number of tourists and the needs of the market for this type of accommodation which can be seen as a chance for entrepreneurs to make profit. Despite the positive trends in tourism many hostels are not successful, and some of them even had to close their doors. The subject of this paper is to determine the factors motivating entrepreneurs to establish a hostel in Zagreb. The paper covers impacts of formal and informal education of entrepreneurs as a principle of sustainable business development. The research objectives are to determine whether the entrepreneurial ventures of establishing hostels are the result of formal education and experience of the entrepreneur or a response to current trends such as increase of tourism activities and to examine whether and to what extent the establishment of hostels preceded the creation and existence of the business and strategic marketing plan, the extent to which plans are implemented and what is their business success today. The aim is also to investigate if the entrepreneurs and managers of hostels in Zagreb are continuously educating themselves, attending training workshops, consulting, using formal and informal learning to ensure long-term viability in the market. The methods applied in this paper are desk research on the basis of domestic and foreign literature, professional and scientific papers, historical method, methods of analysis and synthesis, quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative method was carried out through the distribution of a questionnaire to the founders and owners of all hostels in Zagreb which represents all population as a sample. Qualitative method was carried out by interviewing the persons responsible for the CCC (Croatian Chamber of Commerce), the national hostel association, the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourist Board of Zagreb. The research results emphasize the importance of education and the existence of documents of business and strategic marketing plans in order to prevent failure and ensure long-term sustainability of the business.
