AUGUST ŠENOA AND JULES VERNE: PERCEPTION OF COMMON OR POPULAR AND LITERATURE OF BELLE-LETTRES IN THE 19TH CENTURY

Sažetak
The first section of this essay deals with the contemporary classification of the oeuvre of French author Jules Verne (1828–1905) and proposes a translation as a stimulus for a potential popularity of a writer. Verne’s popularity in the Croatian culture was only partially due to direct knowledge of his work and more frequent by mediation of foreign impacts of Verne’s popularity and the adaptations of his work. In the second section this hypothesis is verified through the example of Verne’s reception in the Croatian literature and culture through the judgements of his contemporary August Šenoa (1838–1881) in the first place. The analysis offers the varies of common and popular in the literature, and illustrates a change of Šenoa’s judgement of Jules Verne, within the context of Šenoa’s notes »Our literature« (»Naša književnost«), »About the croatian theatre« (»O hrvatskom kazalištu«) and Zagrebulje. The analysis also contextually establishes a hypothetical collusion between Verne’s alliance with the Croatian regions and Šenoa’s poetics.
